Made from the insides of broken watches, Lula Dot, graduated at the London Royal College of Art in 2013, gives those broken pieces a new life as jewelry (for a very reasonable price).
Surf boards from collected wine corks… what a great salvo idea from richpeoplethings. Their mission: “When we create a surfboard we try to make it with the maximum respect and care to the environment. From the pine resin to the bees wax that we use as glue until the natural fiber and the bio-resin we use to finish the boards, all our process try to increase that intimal connection to nature.”
Italy’s design giant Doppio Spazio has a heart for eco-design. Famous is their Lady Silk, a chair cover made from granddaddy’s ties – a whimsical and stylish object. Recent is their Skyyy, a clothes-hanger from abandoned skis.
We have seen great bags of Rag-bag produced in a cooperation with ragpickers in India, as well as seat belt bags from U.S.E.D. Both brands are outstanding in the wearables field.
Jacqueline le Bleu is a Dutch Designer with a small but beautiful collection of benches made from old books, called Booked. On show at Ventura Interior Kortrijk, Belgium Oct 17 – 26 2014.
Inner tubes
Worn inner tubes have been on the salvo market for a while. However, they only got on the audiences’ radar when the French brand Krejci designers approached these used material. Their idea? Create highly fashionable, robust and desirable items that people would love to acquire.
Since 2005 on the market is the German brand Feuerwaer specializing in used fire snakes, or fire hoses. The tough raw material of disapproved or torn fire snakes is great for a masculine line of bags and wallets.
More varied, with a strong line of wallets and phone cases, is the collection made from fire hoses of the London based brand Elvis&Kresse. They collect fire hose across the UK. Half their profit go back to the Fire Fighters Charity.
